Do you ever wonder if I have a gambling problem?

You have probably noticed that I go to Vegas one or two times each year, so what’s the deal?

Well, trust me, it is not gambling that takes me there, but I do love it.  What you may not know is that there are beautiful mountains all around Vegas that offer lots of great hikes far, far away from the drunken glitz of The Strip.

You may also not know that I am a pretty big fan of ‘pool sitting’ – I love to just hang out by the pool, listen to music, read, work and nap (the order varies).

You may also recall that my Mastermind group meets there at least once each year, so that is the reason I actually go.

What is the Mastermind group all about?  Well, basically it is coaching for my online business www.HockeyTrainingPro.com and it is really very, very similar to going to a high level training camp.  You have to show up with your work done and ready to impress.

Our coaches Bedros Keuilian and Craig Ballantyne are like the John Wooden and Bear Bryant of online business coaches and if you don’t show up with all your tasks from the last meeting completed, be prepared to get scolded and benched.

The similarities between building successful businesses and becoming a successful athlete are undeniable.

  • You need a good plan
  • Then you need to take action
  • You need to never, give up and never quit
  • Adjust the plan
  • Keep going

Bedros and Craig getting ready to put someone on the “Hot Seat”

At the meeting we each get put on the ‘Hot Seat’ – it is not literally hot, that is just a saying.  We have to present our accomplishments and our exact numbers – what was our conversion, where are we compared to last year at this time – – just like your individual stats for the season.

Some of us show up ready to rock – we have completed our tasks and are ready to get our next set of marching orders, which we will follow.  Others show up and the answers to their questions are wishy washy….

“What was your conversion rate on that web page?” – – “oh, uh, it was probably something like around 3%”

“Did you contact (insert name of key contact)?” – – “oh, uh,  I thought about it, but then I decided to do XYZ instead.”

Do you see what I mean – they were not tracking their successes and they were not following the map to success that our coaches had given them.  You can probably think of a few players on your team who do the same – maybe YOU are one of them – here’s how to tell.

The 3 Questions…

  • Do you have a training journal that includes all of your workouts for the past 3-months?  The exercises, sets, reps, everything?
  • Do you have a plan (or work with a coach) who will lead you step by step along the path to success?  You should be able to tell me what exactly you will be doing this week to improve your performance next week.
  • Do you follow the plan – I mean exactly follow the plan.  No skipping this part and adding in a few extra sets of bench press with the boys in the gym.

If you answered ‘YES’ to all of these questions, then congratulations, you are reinforcing the habits of success that will help you not only in your sport, but also in all aspects of your life.

If you answered ‘NO’ to one or more of those questions – don’t worry, it’s okay.

Chances are you were not even aware that you were doing it.  But now you know and there is no excuse to continue along that path, if excellence is your goal.   So start today. Make a plan – get help so you know if it is the RIGHT plan.

Document the action you have taken.  Follow your plan.  Readjust.  Keep going.

Cheers,
M
